Workplace SOP & 5 C’s Guide

Emergency Biohazard Spill Response: The 5 C’s Guide

Workplace Health & Safety Notice: This procedure is tailored specifically for the Spillmaster Biohazard Spill Kit. It is designed to meet infection control standards and may be printed as a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) or displayed as a laminated placard at first aid and biohazard containment stations.

1. CONTROL the Source & Risk
Open the plastic carry bag and immediately don the complete set of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to establish a barrier against bloodborne pathogens and infectious materials. Put on the pair of gloves, secure the protective face mask, and tie the apron before approaching the spill zone. If applicable, isolate the source of the biological fluid release to prevent further contamination.

2. CONTAIN the Spread
Carefully open the absorbent powder sachet and sprinkle the specialized polymer powder directly over the entire footprint of the biohazard spill. The powder will rapidly bind, gel, and encapsulate the liquid, halting the spread of potentially infectious organic fluids across the floor and minimizing aerosol generation.

3. COMMUNICATE the Hazard
Alert nearby staff, patients, or visitors to stay completely clear of the affected zone to avoid cross-contamination or slip hazards. Notify your WHS supervisor, infection control officer, or site emergency contact according to workplace safety guidelines. Refer to the included physical Spill Kit Instructions for rapid, step-by-step visual guidance during the clean-up process.

4. CLEAN UP the Biohazard
Once the liquid has been fully gelled by the powder, use the scoop & scraper to cleanly lift the solidified mass from the surface. Deposit the collected material directly into the specialized biohazard waste bag. Next, use the disinfectant wipes to thoroughly decontaminate the underlying surface, ensuring all residual traces of biological matter are completely neutralized. Place the used wipes, scoop, scraper, and all disposable PPE (apron, mask, and gloves) into the biohazard waste bag as well.

5. CHECK & Restock
Inspect the treated area to confirm the surface is completely clean, dry, and thoroughly disinfected. Securely seal the biohazard waste bag using a cable tie or twist-tie, and dispose of it strictly in accordance with your local state clinical and biohazard waste regulations. Restore immediate workplace compliance by restocking the station with a fresh Spillmaster Biohazard Kit.
