Emergency Spill Response: The 5 C’s Guide
Workplace Safety Notice: This procedure is tailored specifically for the Spillmaster General Purpose Spill Kit 240L. It may be printed as a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) or displayed as a laminated placard at the kit station.
1. CONTROL the Source & Risk
Open the yellow weather‑resistant 240L wheeled spill kit bin, retrieve the nitrile gloves (2 pairs included), and ensure responders put them on before approaching the spill. If safe, stop the leak at its origin by closing valves, plugging the breach, or carefully uprighting the container to prevent further liquid release.
2. CONTAIN the Spread
Deploy the required number of general purpose absorbent socks around the spill perimeter to halt fluid migration. For large-scale containment, deploy the long absorbent sock (3m × 75mm) and link the standard absorbent socks (75mm × 1.2m, up to 4 included) end-to-end to form a continuous, high-volume barrier. Prioritise blocking access to stormwater drains, unsealed ground, and pedestrian walkways.
3. COMMUNICATE the Hazard
Alert nearby workshop or transit staff and immediately restrict access to the affected zone. Notify your WHS supervisor or site emergency warden according to workplace safety procedures. 4. CLEAN UP the Liquid
Apply the necessary amount of loose absorbent from the Floor Sweep 10kg bags (3 included) directly onto the pooled liquid to quickly bind and solidify the spill. For deep pools, high-volume pooling, or ongoing leaks, deploy the general purpose absorbent pillows (45cm × 45cm, up to 2 included) directly into the flow, and use the heavy‑weight general purpose poly pads (48cm × 43cm, up to 40 included) as required to clean up remaining surface films. Use the dustpan & brush to cleanly sweep up the saturated loose absorbents. Collect all contaminated materials and place them into the supplied contaminated waste bags (450mm × 720mm, up to 10 included) for safe handling.
5. CHECK & Restock
Inspect the area to ensure no slippery residue or dangerous fluid sheen remains. Securely seal the contaminated waste bags and dispose of them in accordance with local state environmental regulations.
