Emergency Spill Response: The 5 C’s Guide
Workplace Safety Notice: This procedure is tailored specifically for the Spillmaster Chemical Spill Kit 50L. It may be printed as a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) or displayed as a laminated placard at the kit station.
1. CONTROL the Source & Risk
Remove the pair of nitrile gloves from the blue PVC Grab‑N‑Go spill kit bag and put them on before approaching the chemical spill. If safe, stop the leak at its origin by closing valves, plugging the breach, or carefully uprighting the container to prevent further hazardous release.
2. CONTAIN the Spread
Deploy the Hazchem absorbent sock (75mm × 1.2m) around the spill perimeter to prevent aggressive fluid migration. Prioritise blocking access to stormwater drains, unsealed ground, and pedestrian walkways.
3. COMMUNICATE the Hazard
Alert nearby workshop or transit staff and immediately restrict access to the chemical spill zone. For hazardous chemical incidents, notify your WHS supervisor or site emergency warden according to workplace safety procedures. Ensure the high-visibility spill kit sticker is properly maintained and refer to the included physical Spill Kit Instructions for rapid on-site reference.
4. CLEAN UP the Liquid
Apply the required amount of loose absorbent from the 3 available Hazsorb 7.5L bags directly onto pooled liquid to bind and solidify the chemical. For high-volume pooling or sump leaks, deploy the Hazchem absorbent pillow (45cm × 45cm) directly into the flow to draw up bulk liquids, and use as many of the heavy‑weight Hazchem poly pads (48cm × 43cm) as necessary to wipe up remaining residues. Collect all saturated absorbents and place them into the supplied contaminated waste bags (450mm × 720mm) for safe handling.
5. CHECK & Restock
Inspect the area to ensure no hazardous chemical residue or dangerous fluid sheen remains. Securely seal the contaminated waste bags and dispose of them in accordance with local state EPA environmental regulations. Restore full response readiness by restocking the kit with a matching Spillmaster Refill Pack.
