Emergency Spill Response: The 5 C’s Guide
Workplace Safety Notice: This procedure is tailored specifically for the Spillmaster Chemical Spill Kit 15L. It may be printed as a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) or displayed as a laminated placard at the kit station.
1. CONTROL the Source & Risk
Remove the nitrile gloves from the PVC kit bag and put them on before approaching the chemical spill. If safe, stop the leak at its origin by closing valves, plugging the breach, or carefully uprighting the container to prevent further hazardous release.
2. CONTAIN the Spread
Place the Hazchem absorbent sock (75mm × 1.2m) around the spill perimeter to prevent aggressive fluid migration. Prioritise blocking access to stormwater drains, unsealed ground, and pedestrian walkways.
3. COMMUNICATE the Hazard
Alert nearby workshop or transit staff and immediately restrict access to the chemical spill zone. For hazardous chemical incidents, notify your WHS supervisor or site emergency warden according to workplace safety procedures. Refer to the included physical Spill Kit Instructions for rapid on-site reference.
4. CLEAN UP the Liquid
Apply the premium Hazsorb 7.5L bag of loose absorbent directly onto pooled liquid to quickly bind and solidify aggressive chemical residues. Place the heavy‑weight Hazchem poly pads (48cm × 43cm) onto the remaining liquid to safely absorb the bulk of the chemical. Collect all saturated absorbents and place them into the supplied contaminated waste bags for safe handling and disposal.
5. CHECK & Restock
Inspect the area to ensure no hazardous chemical residue or dangerous fluid sheen remains. Seal the waste bag using the supplied cable tie and dispose of it in accordance with local state EPA environmental regulations. Restore readiness by restocking the kit with a matching Spillmaster Refill Pack.
