Workplace SOP & 5 C’s Guide

Emergency Spill Response: The 5 C’s Guide

Workplace Safety Notice: This procedure is tailored specifically for the Spillmaster Chemical Spill Kit 80L. It may be printed as a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) or displayed as a laminated placard at the kit station.

1. CONTROL the Source & Risk
Remove a pair of nitrile gloves from the blue PVC Grab‑N‑Go spill kit bag and put them on before approaching the chemical spill. If safe, stop the leak at its origin by closing valves, plugging the breach, or carefully uprighting the container to prevent further hazardous release.

2. CONTAIN the Spread
Deploy the necessary number of Hazchem absorbent socks (75mm × 1.2m, up to 2 included) around the spill perimeter to block liquid migration. Prioritise blocking access to stormwater drains, unsealed ground, and pedestrian walkways.

3. COMMUNICATE the Hazard
Alert nearby workshop or transit staff and immediately restrict access to the chemical spill zone. For hazardous chemical incidents, notify your WHS supervisor or site emergency warden according to workplace safety procedures. Ensure the high-visibility spill kit sticker is properly maintained and refer to the included physical Spill Kit Instructions for rapid on-site reference.

4. CLEAN UP the Liquid
Pour the required volume from the Hazsorb 30L bag of loose absorbent directly onto pooled liquid to quickly bind and solidify aggressive chemical residues. For deep pools or ongoing sumps, place the Hazchem absorbent pillow (45cm × 45cm) directly into the liquid, and use the heavy‑weight Hazchem poly pads (48cm × 43cm, up to 20 included) as needed to wipe up any remaining surface films. Collect all saturated absorbents and place them into the supplied contaminated waste bags (450mm × 720mm) for safe handling.

5. CHECK & Restock
Inspect the area to ensure no hazardous chemical residue or dangerous fluid sheen remains. Securely seal the contaminated waste bags using the supplied cable ties and dispose of them in accordance with local state EPA environmental regulations. Restore full response readiness by restocking the kit with a matching Spillmaster Refill Pack.
