Emergency Spill Response: The 5 C’s Guide
Workplace Safety Notice: This procedure is tailored specifically for the Spillmaster Chemical Spill Kit 120L. It may be printed as a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) or displayed as a laminated placard at the kit station.
1. CONTROL the Source & Risk
Open the blue weather‑resistant 120L wheeled bin, retrieve the nitrile gloves (2 pairs included), and ensure responders put them on before approaching the chemical spill. If safe, stop the leak at its origin by closing valves, plugging the breach, or carefully uprighting the container to prevent further hazardous release.
2. CONTAIN the Spread
Deploy the required number of Hazchem absorbent socks (75mm Ă— 1.2m, up to 3 included) end-to-end to form a continuous barrier around the spill perimeter and halt fluid migration. Prioritise blocking access to stormwater drains, unsealed ground, and pedestrian walkways.
3. COMMUNICATE the Hazard
Alert nearby workshop or transit staff and immediately restrict access to the chemical spill zone. For large-scale hazardous chemical incidents, notify your WHS supervisor or site emergency warden according to workplace safety procedures. Ensure the high-visibility spill kit sticker on the bin is properly maintained and refer to the included physical Spill Kit Instructions for rapid on-site reference.
4. CLEAN UP the Liquid
Apply the necessary amount of loose absorbent from the Hazsorb 30L bags (2 included) directly onto pooled liquid to bind and solidify the residues. For deep pools or ongoing leaks, deploy the Hazchem absorbent pillow (45cm × 45cm) into the liquid, and use the heavy‑weight Hazchem poly pads (48cm × 43cm, up to 25 included) as required to clean up surface films. Use the dustpan & brush to cleanly sweep up the loose absorbents. Collect all contaminated materials and place them into the supplied contaminated waste bags (450mm × 720mm, up to 7 included) for safe handling.
5. CHECK & Restock
Inspect the area to ensure no hazardous chemical residue or dangerous fluid sheen remains. Securely seal the contaminated waste bags using cable ties and dispose of them in accordance with local state EPA environmental regulations. Restore full mobile response readiness by restocking the wheeled bin with a matching Spillmaster Refill Pack.
