For safety and environmental compliance, the pallet must provide enough free capacity to contain a credible leak. The required capacity can vary with the liquid type, storage volume, location and applicable state, territory or site rules. Where flammable or combustible liquids are involved, requirements under AS 1940 and local authority expectations should be considered as part of the storage assessment. Do not assume a pallet is compliant merely because it is marketed as bunded.

Keep compatible absorbents and a suitable spill response kit close by, and ensure staff know how to isolate the source before starting the clean-up.

Sump capacity should be selected before convenience features. Begin with the total volume of the largest container, the number of containers stored and the relevant requirements for the substance and location. Site procedures, lease conditions, insurer expectations and environmental obligations may set a higher standard than a basic calculation.

Avoid using the stated drum count as the only buying criterion. Two four-drum pallets can have very different sump capacities, load ratings and chemical suitability. The usable containment volume also needs to account for the space displaced by drums and grating, which manufacturers generally address in their stated sump rating.

For a defensible purchasing decision, record the drum size, product name, dangerous goods classification where applicable, storage location and planned use. That information lets the safety or facilities team compare suitable options properly and supports future audits.

Check these practical details before ordering

A spill pallet can have the right nominal capacity and still fail the day-to-day test. Confirm these operational points before it arrives on site:

  • Load rating: It must safely support the combined weight of full drums, not just empty containers.
  • Chemical compatibility: Verify the pallet material against every liquid that may be stored, including waste streams.
  • Handling method: Check forklift pockets, drum trolley clearance and whether the unit can be moved loaded or only empty.
  • Grating design: Removable grates make inspection and recovery of collected liquid easier, but must sit securely under load.
  • Site environment: Consider UV exposure, uneven concrete, rainwater ingress outdoors and the risk of vehicle impact.

An uncovered pallet can fill with rainwater, reducing its available containment capacity and potentially creating contaminated liquid that requires controlled disposal. A weatherproof drum store, compatible cover or managed inspection regime may be required. Do not drain collected liquid to stormwater or sewer unless the substance and discharge have been assessed and authorised.

Placement matters as much as product selection

Put drum pallets on a stable, level surface where leaks can be seen and managed. Keep them away from stormwater drains, doorways, traffic lanes and ignition sources where relevant. If the storage area is exposed to forklifts, install physical protection or locate the pallet outside the impact zone.

Segregation also matters. Do not place incompatible chemicals on the same spill pallet simply because there is space. If a leak allows incompatible substances to mix in the sump, the containment system can become a reaction hazard. Separate storage may be necessary for acids, alkalis, oxidisers, fuels and other incompatible products.
