Choose the Right Spill Kit

Start with the type of spill you need to prepare for:

  • Oil & Fuel Spill Kits — for oils, fuels and other hydrocarbons, including applications where water-repellent absorbents are required.
  • General Purpose Spill Kits — for common workplace spills where a general-purpose absorbent is appropriate.
  • Chemical Spill Kits (Hazchem) — for chemical spill response where chemical-compatible absorbents and equipment are required.
  • Marine Spill Kits — for oil and fuel spill response around waterways, vessels and marine environments.
  • Biohazard Spill Kits — for cleanup of blood, vomit and other body-fluid spills.
  • Spill Kit Refills — for replenishing used components without replacing the complete kit container.

Selecting a Kit Size

Spill kit litre designations help identify the different kit sizes in a product range; they should not be treated as a guaranteed absorbency figure. Consider the largest reasonably foreseeable spill, the liquids involved, the work area and how quickly response equipment can be accessed. For more guidance, see our How to Select a Spill Kit guide.

Choosing the Right Spill Kit for Your Site

Choosing the right spill kit starts with the liquids or hazards present at your site. From there, consider the likely spill volume, where a spill could occur and how quickly suitable response equipment can be reached.

Spillmaster supplies spill kits for different workplace, industrial, transport and marine applications:

  • General Purpose Spill Kits: For common workplace liquids where a general-purpose absorbent is appropriate, including many oils, coolants and water-based liquids.
  • Oil & Fuel Spill Kits: For oils, fuels and other hydrocarbons, including applications where water-repellent absorbents are required.
  • Chemical Spill Kits (Hazchem): For chemical spill response where chemical-compatible absorbents and equipment are required. Suitability should be checked for the particular chemical involved.
  • Marine Spill Kits: For oil and fuel spill response around waterways, vessels, marinas and other marine environments.
  • Biohazard Spill Kits: For cleanup of blood, vomit and other body-fluid spills in workplaces and public environments.

If you are unsure which type or size is appropriate, our How to Select a Spill Kit guide explains the main factors to consider before choosing a kit.

Planning for Workplace Spill Response

A spill kit is most useful when it is matched to the liquids being handled and positioned where people can reach it quickly. The appropriate response equipment will depend on the substances present, the quantity that could reasonably be released, the surrounding work area and site-specific hazards such as drains, waterways or traffic areas.

Spill kits commonly combine absorbents with items such as containment socks, pads, loose absorbent, PPE and waste bags. The exact contents vary by kit type and size, so check the individual product specifications when comparing options.

For larger workplaces, several appropriately positioned spill kits may provide more practical access than relying on one central kit located a long distance from potential spill areas.

Spill Kit Selection & Maintenance FAQs

What size spill kit do I need for my site?

There is no single spill kit size that suits every workplace. Consider the largest reasonably foreseeable spill, the liquids involved, where they are stored or used, nearby drains or waterways and how quickly response equipment can be accessed.

Smaller kits can be practical for vehicles, mobile workers and localised work areas, while larger mobile kits may be more appropriate for workshops, warehouses and industrial sites. Spill kit litre designations identify different kit sizes within a range and should not automatically be treated as a guaranteed absorbency figure.

For a more detailed selection process, see How to Select a Spill Kit.

Do workplaces need spill response equipment?

Workplaces should assess the risks associated with the liquids and hazardous substances they store, handle or transport and determine appropriate controls and emergency-response arrangements for their circumstances.

A suitable spill kit can form part of those arrangements by keeping relevant absorbents, containment materials, PPE and disposal items together and accessible. Specific legal, environmental and dangerous-goods requirements vary according to the substances, quantities, activities and jurisdiction involved, so site-specific obligations should be checked separately.

What is the difference between General Purpose, Oil & Fuel, and Hazchem spill kits?

General Purpose: Designed for common workplace liquids where a general-purpose absorbent is suitable.

Oil & Fuel: Use water-repellent absorbents suited to oils, fuels and other hydrocarbons. This makes them particularly useful where hydrocarbons may need to be recovered from wet surfaces or water.

Chemical/Hazchem: Intended for chemical spill response using chemical-compatible absorbents and equipment. Because chemicals vary considerably, compatibility should be checked for the substance being handled rather than relying on kit colour alone.

You can compare all available types through the Spill Kits range.

How often should spill kits be inspected?

Spill kits should be checked regularly as part of your site's inspection and emergency-preparedness procedures, and they should be checked after use.

Check that the kit is accessible, the container is serviceable and the required absorbents, PPE, disposal bags and other components are present and in usable condition. Any used, damaged or missing components should be replaced so the kit is ready for the next incident.

Can I replace used absorbents without buying a complete new spill kit?

Yes. If the existing spill kit container remains suitable, used or missing components can often be replenished rather than replacing the complete kit.

Spillmaster supplies Spill Kit Refills for General Purpose, Oil & Fuel and Chemical/Hazchem kits. Check the refill contents and compatibility with your existing kit before ordering.
